When was isaac manley born
It is based on a Large Chart by John Purdy c. The cloth spine that once held the front and backboards together has frayed and is missing, but the map is otherwise in very good condition. On conservation advice therefore I've decided not to replace the spine but to leave the map, from a collector's point of view, "as found. First published by R. Laurie of 53 Fleet Street London on 15 October , this edition states that it contains "Additions etc. Alaska, for example, is still marked "Russian America", as Mexico extends into California and what is now Texas and the south-western United States.
The Hawaiian archipelago is still shown as the Sandwich Islands, as Cook named them. Australia is divided into New Holland to the west, and New South Wales as Cook had called the entire eastern seaboard — though the continent as a whole bears the name "Australia" suggested by Matthew Flinders. Tasmania still appears as Van Diemen's Land — and would for another 20 years or more until the geographers and politicians sought to eradicate memories of that notorious penal colony by changing the name.
But Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane and have not yet been established as settlements Moreover, knowledge of both the Arctic and Antarctic regions was still very limited at this date. Mere points and faint squiggly lines, like worm casts, labelled Palmer's Land, Sandwich Land or Southern Thule, suggest the presence of the great southern continent for which navigators had been searching from Magellan to Cook, buried under ice and snow and essentially uninhabitable to humankind as Cook had suggested.
And the lands of the "Arctic Icy Ocean" as the map calls it, while better known, remain uncertain. This was, after all, the period of the search for the north-west passage — then inaccessible because of ice as Cook discovered on his third voyage, but now apparently sometimes open in this age of warmer temperatures. Thus, while the map uses Mercator's projection, Greenland is not depicted as a separate island. Rather it has a coastline extending above much of northern Canada.
Today, it is known that these lands are in fact a series of large and small islands But then, it is this distinction between what was once thought What has been just as enchanting for me is the discovery of the story behind the family to whom he gave it. On a blue endpaper attached to the front cover, Isaac — then aged 79 — has written with his pen in a firm hand: Admiral Manley, To His young friend Geo. He also had the great good fortune, of inheriting the bulk of his father's estate.
His elder brother, Captain John Manley, died without issue in As the next son, Isaac inherited estates in Staffordshire and Cheshire, warehouses in Crutched Friars, London and a good deal of other property as his Will, makes clear.
To quote from the obituary published in the Gentleman's Magazine in December "As a country gentleman, Admiral Manley was highly esteemed, and is generally and deeply regretted by all classes of society. Not bad for a boy who joined Endeavour as a servant in June In a way he reminds me of Admiral Croft in Jane Austen's novel "Persuasion" retiring from the sea to the life as a landed gentleman.
Yet it is for the first part of his life that we and posterity will remember Admiral Isaac George Manley, as both the obituary and his memorial in Checkendon Church remind us: "He was the last survivor of the crew who sailed with Captain Cook during his first voyage around the world.

Warm Regards. Ruth Slater. Many thanks for your comment, Ruth. Many thanks for the offer to view your material, but I am at present fully engaged with a project about Captain Matthew Flinders and the voyage of HMS Investigator, and that will keep me busy for the next few years. Kind regards Anthony. Have you been contacted by anyone with the Isaac Smith connection. Kind Regards Ruth Slater. I am only midway through your book and loving it. His father served also as servant on square riggers from England.
Marmaduke and his history goes back to Georgio de Manley adjutant Generale to Papal army and he escorted Napoleon to his exile to Elba.
Looking forward to any follow up books on this subject as my cousin from Tasmania has just spent three months in Britain chasing history up re the Manley history. I hope you enjoy the story, Peter. The scientific, cultural, political and social consequences of the Endeavour voyage endure to this day; but it was also a great adventure to those on board, and it is this that I principally wanted to portray.
I found reference to 'Captain Cooks Apprentice' and have purchased it to read on a forthcoming trip. I find the seafarers of the era of, Cook, Bligh, Flinders, Fitzroy etc very interesting, a period of which I think are an exceptional group which could also include Vancouver and others. Many thanks Karen, I'd like to see the material very much. I suspect though that the John Manley mentioned may be a different person - Captain John Manley a naval officer - whose name confused me greatly during my research.
Thank you for this! I have a book with a manuscript description of the Battle of Ushant on the endpapers by John Manley Esq, Isaac George's father, which rather suggests that his son may also have been present at that inconclusive battle. If you can let me have an email address for you I'll send you my illustrated description of it.

No biography has ever been written about Isaac Manley, but there has been a biographical novel about him, 4 and he featured prominently in a fictional work about a goat that sailed in Endeavour.
