Which browsers support theora

This was addressed by Mozilla when the launched H. Opera Firefox now supports MP4 as well. Chrome 4. Chrome 6. Safari on Macs and Windows PCs 3. In theory, you could require your users to install third-party QuickTime plugins.

In practice, few users are going to do that. However, QuickTime does ship with support for H. It will also play WebM video if you install a third-party codec, which is not installed by default on any version of Windows. IE does not support other third-party codecs unlike Safari, which will play anything QuickTime can play. Safari will play anything that QuickTime can play. QuickTime comes pre-installed with H.

There are installable third-party plugins that add support for Theora and WebM, but each user needs to install these plugins before Safari will recognize those video formats.

Google Chrome promised to drop support for H. Will we end up in a situation where H. Or will Theora gain enough momentum to entice Apple and the big video sites into supporting it, which will lead us into a world where video on the web becomes free and open, enabling optimal use by everyone?

I know which situation has my preference, and I know which situation is better for us web developers. We web developers additionally play a part in this fight ourselves, and our choices can matter. The more high quality video will be published online in Theora and not in H. Although Fronteers is no Wikipedia which site will host all their videos in Theora , we are beginning to become a sizable organization, with a decent reputation, which we can use to good effect here, helping the fight for an open web.

What is your opinion? Is this a good idea, or should we just be practical and publish H. In May , they made this codec open source as part of the WebM Project , which did not only gain instant support of Mozilla and Opera with alpha versions of Firefox, Opera and Chrome supporting WebM, and stable versions to be released over the next few months , but also of a host of other software and hardware vendors.

Additionally, Google has begun converting every single video on YouTube to WebM, giving a powerful impetus to the growth of the WebM ecosystem. As of now, Microsoft continues to back H. The position of open video on an open web has gotten a lot stronger, but nothing has been decided yet, and the situation remains in flux.

As Fronteers, we continue to believe it's in the best interest of the web to only support open standards which can be freely implemented. The move may have been motivated partially by Microsoft's discontinuation of its Groove Music Pass service and open endorsement of Spotify. Spotify is one of the world's largest music streaming services, and its desktop client uses Vorbis as the default audio codec.

Direct integration in Windows 10 would mean that Spotify would not have to distribute its desktop application with its own audio codecs to enable support for Vorbis on Windows machines. While that is still necessary on older versions of Windows Spotify supports, as Microsoft will integrate Vorbis only on Windows 10, it could be beneficial in the long run on Windows 10 machines.

Microsoft will add support for the three open formats to its Windows 10 platform and Microsoft Edge. That's a good thing, considering that users don't have to install codecs manually anymore to add support, or rely on media players to support these with binary codecs instead. Now You : Which audio or video codecs, or container formats, do you use predominantly? Firefox still does not support. Only the download pop-up jumps in your face.

What a shame! Go Edge, GO! Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Please click on the following link to open the newsletter signup page: Ghacks Newsletter Sign up. Ghacks is a technology news blog that was founded in by Martin Brinkmann.
